As you may remember, one activity in the “Chemists Celebrate Earth Day” celebration was an Illustrated Haiku Contest for K-12 students; it’s our pleasure to announce the contest 1st- and 2nd-place winners (and the ACS Local Sections that received their winning entries):

Identify the following elements and use their atomic symbols to spell the name of a Central American country.

1. This element has an atomic number of 67.  Holmium (Ho)

2. Its name comes from the Greek words for “new” and “twin.”  Neodymium (Nd)

3. Has the highest atomic weight of the naturally occurring elements.  Uranium (U)

4. Marie Curie won the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry in part for the discovery and isolation of this element.   Radium (Ra)

5. An ancient name for this element is “brimstone.”  Sulfur (S)
